The International Mathematics Competition (IMC) in its current form has existed since 2008, when the two events IWYMIC and EMIC merged into one event. The IWYMIC (Invitational World Youth Mathematics Intercity Competition) was launched in 1999 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It was established by Professor Leou Hsian of the Kaohsiung National Normal University for Junior Secondary School students. The EMIC (Elementary Mathematics International Contest) was started four years later in 2003 by Dr Kajornpai Pramote of the Ministry of Education of Thailand. The first EMIC had 14 participating countries.

Both divisions consists of two papers. The first paper is an individual paper lasting 90 minutes and the second paper is a team contests for teams of four lasting approximately an hour. Apart from these two papers, which constitutes the main part of the IMC, there is also usually a Puzzle Challenge and a Cultural Event. Prizes are also awarded for these.
